Libra – realm of tending balance and harmony in relationship

Libra season (24th.September to 23rd.October 2026), begins at Autumn Equinox as the day and night move into poise and balance, equal in their relationship to one another. Colours in nature are enriched as the season changes. Leaves take on Autumnal hues of gold, russet and ruby, as the life and death forces, anabolic and catabolic processes in nature, move into equal balance after Summer’s uprushing growth. Leaves flutter gracefully as they fall, and the colours dance in a new fusion of subtlety and flaming richness. There is a wistfulness in the air…as Summer fades and we are poised at the threshold of a new seasonal landscape.

Setting the scene – Images, dreams, life experiences, wonderings and wanderings, and my grandson Malachi’s questions about the nature of the Zodiac signs all inspire me to explore and scribble down these musings upon each Zodiac sign. Each one is portrayed as a Theatre of Being, with it’s own unique ambience, backdrop, characters and props. The Zodiac signs represent twelve aspects of an unfolding journey. Twelve archetypal themes. Twelve ways of being human. Twelve ways of experiencing and engaging with Life. Twelve learning grounds with the potential to find medicine and healing, to become more whole in ourselves. It is an offering and opportunity to explore a particular facet of Life and being human. In the Zodiac Theatre of Being, we are all simultaneously acting and observing.

Welcome to the Libra Theatre of Being. Come a-wandering into this imaginal realm…..

You find yourself drawn once more through the Zodiac portal with weathered ancient symbols carved throughout myriad eras, imbued with a richness of magic and mystery which sings through your bones. You are journeying into territory of ancient memory, which re-weaves visions into your everyday. As above, so below. As beyond, so here and now.

You behold an elegant archway of carved ash wood, pale and beautiful, skilfully carved to reveal the potential within the raw form of nature’s wildness. A graceful design inspired by human vision, an architecture born from the pursuit of beauty and symmetry, a wish to bring harmony into form.

Through this Libran archway, you enter a landscape of beauty with an essence of calm and peace. Soul balm. You see an artist at their easel, painting a lake overarched by a weeping willow. A Victorian folly with gothic arches and graceful turrets can be glimpsed amidst woodland on the far shore, golden leaves carpeting the ground.

Your eye is drawn to a group of people sitting at a round table, engaged in earnest discussion. Voices float on a gentle breeze – the conversation is on the subject of peace, what it really means, and how to reach a collective agreement as to a strategy to bring peace into action, amidst a world of war, inequality, unfairness and burning bridges where primal emotions run roughshod, stifling and challenging finer human values and ethics.

Libra is a season and Zodiac essence of relationship, with an aim to create fairness, balance, justice and equilibrium. Fired and inspired by visions of perfect harmony, this essence is driven to quietly yet powerfully live by refined concepts of human being and action. It is the pursuit of perfection – being pro-active towards creating and inspiring balanced and co-operative relationship between members of humankind – one to one, you and me – which is then magnified and extended in settings of kith and kin, groups, family, government, international coalitions, worker co-operatives, alliances. It is the pursuit of  how to bring these principles of fostering harmiony and balance into being, as stewards of nature kingdoms – between animals and plants, and in the inter-relationships of elements. It is the bringing of beauty and harmony into form around us – in architecture, interior design, in art, in clothes design or haut couture.

Libra is the Zodiac sign of cardinal Air. A yang/masculine sign. A quality of directional wind of mind and thinking. The initiative of ideas and concepts. A seeking to inspire discourse, co-operation, agreement, codes of ethics, contracts, peace agreements.

This is a sign of mediation. Of conscious consideration. Of diplomacy. Of taking a breath and stepping back from the heat of instincts and emotions. To think and consider –  ‘If I want this, and you want that…how can we find a way to agree’? This can be a complex process – oft infused, fraught and inflamed with deep feelings which may have roots embedded in pain over time, historical inequality and strong instincts a-brewing. Libra is committed to finding a way to bridge dissonance, disagreement and breakdown, if at all possible. Using strategies and techniques of objectivity and reason to negotiate a position where both or all parties concerned feel acknowledged in their experience, considered and heard. Followed by an unfolding process which seeks mutual recognition and hopefully, repair and resolution. In this sometimes lengthy process, some needs may be met and agreed, with maybe necessary compromise in the name of fairness.

In mediation rooms and war cabinets, in the pursuit of repairing disharmony and  disagreement, it becomes clear that sometimes agreement will not, or cannot be reached, even with the most skilfull diplomatic negotiations. In the face of this real-isation, outer over-riding authorities have been created to uphold codes of decency, fairness and justice. Laws, courts and juries were born from this Zodiac essence. Institutions which reflect dominant cultural ethics – and oft in need of overhauling, updating and evolving. Lady Justice graces the central dome of the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales. A symbol of highest hope for reaching justice, trickling downwards into the court of human beings, with hopes and fears, feelings and instincts interweaving.

In holding peace and harmony in high esteem as an overarching principle, Libra nature may prioritise or elevate the needs, wishes or preferences of the other party. Conflict is a dread for many Librans – as is disharmony, anger, cruelty, selfishness or any dug-in entrenched position which lacks in consideration of ‘The Other’. Amidst the discomfort and unpleasantness of inner or outer  conflict, Libran nature may avoid addressing the issue via various means – one of the most common being an immediacy of agreement with the other person/people, decision paralysis (sitting on the fence), or a compromise too swiftly struck, all to maintain harmony and apparent ease. But of course this will not last, as the wound beneath the plaster of harmony will seek healing via opening, or if this opening is not facilitated, by turning inwards within the system, ultimately creating an imbalance within.

Libra is wise to heed the call of personal irritation, annoyance, resentment, cross-patchiness, anger, rage, as these are healthy inner warning systems that something is out of balance. Maybe these feelings are signs of a revelation making it’s way into awareness, that a way of relating, a relationship or a situation is out of balance and is now demanding attention and adaptation or change.  Libra is then faced with seeking the medicine with which it has a deep kinship – to balance. To acknowledge the whole human landscape of feelings and emotions which lie powerfully alongside ideals and visions; to allow these to co-exist; to include them, and to resist harsh judgement and separatism. To apply reason and rationale with an objective deep breath.

Libra holds an inner vision of perfect human relating, through which all relationship is perceived. There may be many experiences along the way, of yearning for human relating to reach further out of the swamp of primordial instinct, towards elegance and grace of mutual consideration and respect. And an attitude of re-evaluating harmony and how it may be created, re-inspired and re-generated. Reality may feel laced with disappointment, yet the gift of Libra is the innate knowing, carrying and infusing reality with peace, harmony, fairness and balance. And alongside, realising that perfect poise is something which happens as a passing and temporary state between before and after, past and future.

As you consider this Libra Theatre of Being, pause for a moment…

May you be revel in beauty. May you be inspired where you see dignity, decency, consideration, kindness, bridge-building in action. May you cultivate true peace and harmony wherever possible. May you know the sounds and visions which bring you serenity, tranquillity, and an uprushing of inspiration towards the exquisiteness of Life and it’s divine symmetry.
