Virgo season (August 23rd – September 23rd 2026) emerges out of the golden days of Summer’s end, when a quiet stillness softly descends as Dusk spreads her inky blue evening cloak a little earlier, and the early morning dew bejewels spider webs, beyond the rosy glow of Dawn. There is a hush, a shift, a pause…a settling. A nip of Autumn in the air.
Setting the scene – In these scribbled musings, (yes, that’s how they always begin!), I am exploring each Zodiac sign as a Theatre of Being, each with it’s own ambience, unique backdrop, characters and props. The Zodiac signs represent twelve aspects of an unfolding journey. Twelve archetypal themes. Twelve ways of being human. Twelve ways of experiencing and engaging with Life. Twelve learning grounds with the potential to find medicine and healing, to become more whole in ourselves. It is an offering and opportunity to explore a particular facet of Life and being human. In the Zodiac Theatre of Being, we are all simultaneously acting and observing.
Welcome to the Virgo Theatre of Being. Step into the imaginal realm…..
You find yourself drawn through the Zodiac portal once more, rich with ancient symbols carved throughout myriad eras, imbued with a magic and mystery which sings through your bones.
You behold an archway of woven grain stems braided with dried herbs, fruits, flowers and seed heads, a beauty of honouring and preserving the Earth’s gifts – a harvest of food and medicine, crafting and building materials. Shelter, healing and nourishment – provisions so essential to life.
This archway opens onto a landscape of goldening and subtle muted hues – ochre, rust, rosehip red, sloe-purple, lichen-silver green, soft-browns as the Earth becomes more visible after the harvest. You see kinfolk engaged in many pursuits – some together, some alone. There is a ‘hum’ of focussed attention and quiet dedication. Some are gathering late ripening plants, some are sorting and ordering – assessing which parts of the plants are for food, or medicine, or crafting or building materials – everything is useful. Some folk are brewing, some preserving. Some are mending and making. Some are sharpening, oiling and storing tools carefully, some are alongside learning by watching and assisting.
You notice a woman quietly walking a path to a nearby stone circle, a basket of offerings on her arm. She is the sacred ritual priestess, who will seek solitude within the circle, quietly move into a trance to commune with both Earth and Spirit, then translate this en-trance into preparations for the ceremony of blessing on the Harvest Moon. She will set the scene, creating a welcoming crucible for Spirit to braid with Earth in sacred communion.
Virgo is a season and Zodiac essence of ritual – both sacred and earthly. Gratitude, blessing and honouring naturally accompany the practical work of the harvest and the preserving of food for Wintry survival. Senses are immersed in the sweetness of stewing fruits and jam-making, the sharpness of pickling vegetables and kimchi making, the waft of drying herbs, the sharp-sweet of medicinal elixirs…all being created in response to our needs for nourishment and healing. Wood is stacked, kindling is gathered. Homes made weather-tight. Socks and jumpers are checked over – then mended, darned or re-purposed. Harvest is celebrated, together with honouring the passing of time, with all its preciousness.
This is a sign of both sacred and profane. Virgo is the sign which knows, bone deep, that the sacred infuses the profane, and the profane offers an earthly crucible for the sacred to weave into being. They are a braid, ever-entwined.
Virgo is the Zodiac sign of Mutable Earth. A yin/feminine sign. Quietly and pragmatically adaptive, Virgo draws us into an awareness of Life constantly evolving through cycles of becoming, stabilising, breaking down and transforming into a new state or form. There is an order to everything, even if it is unseen. This informs and inspires living and moving with (sympatico) a sensitivity to the pulse of seasons, tides and ambience.
The archetype of this sign is The Virgin, or the ritual priestess, who knows the power of the body (made of Earth), as a crucible for the Spirit. And who is aware of sensuality and sexual union creating a powerful fusion and invitation to Spirit.
The image of the Virgin benefits from some Virgoan un-picking. The original meaning of virgin was a woman ‘self-possessed’, not chaste, or still-in-waiting to become whole via sexual initiation or belonging to another. This archetype was already whole and complete, and it seems over time, this became a challenge to many religious and social orders. This is the sign of the ancient temple priestess, who knew the art of spiritual initiation through sexual communion. This is the quiet healer in the woods. Or the wildly sensual consort. And the tides which informed her movements between these spaces and qualities of being, would arise from her quiet attunement, within solitude, to the instinctive and celestial weavings which she beheld in her blood, bones and the circling of the stars.
Virgo’s soul-felt desire is to be of useful service in life. To learn and hone skills and build wisdom which may support our fundamental needs. Then to sit back, observe, re-assess and adapt if necessary. Virgo takes an approach of assessing and analysing the state of wellbeing and integratity of a situation; health, a system, a relationship, a garment, a building. Observing with a forensic eye for detail. Is there something not working? What may re-create or re-kindle wholeness or functionality? Can it be further improved? Is there a fundamental integrity? Where is it, in it’s current cycle of evolution? What may be needed?
Virgo’s forensic eye for detail and analysis may be a gift or a bane. Discerning…or nit-picking?! A gift, when a crucial factor is spied and can be attended – imagine this skill in action in surgery or diagnostics, using a precision tool, editing a book, finding a needle in a haystack, or sorting wheat from chaff.
The bane lies in noticing that one imperfection, that something out of place, that one word thoughtlessly spoken amidst an otherwise thoughtful conversation, that one inaccuracy of landscaping….all of which, through a Virgo lens, may be forevermore hard to ignore and can easily become the central focus, in forgetfulness of the greater whole, or grand scheme of things!
Every sign has a learning ground, where medicine and healing may be found through active engagement with a life theme. For Virgo this includes keeping a beady forensic eye on personal appraisals and standard-holding. To recognise that soul-felt desire to give a good and thorough service, creation or product, to offer something worthwhile and useful. To learn that high standards are a benchmark, and reality has its tides and ways, and both are always entwining. Learning when a critical eye is useful, or when it may be destructive. Noticing when something is truly ‘good enough’. Not being overly precise or task-masterish, but honouring the principle of ‘as good as can be’. Not endlessly waiting for the ‘right’ moment (or it may just slip by). Remembering that everything is in process and isn’t it maybe better to sometimes take a deep breath and take a risk, rather than hide one’s light under a bushel?
And finding and embedding what may offer a wise and steady anchorage and sense of harbour, when buffeted and ruffled by the disorderly wild winds of life, and things which feel ‘out of order’ or ‘out of control’. Discovering what can smooth and soothe ruffled feathers may brings calm and balm to a Virgo soul.
This sign has a deep honouring and awareness of the body, it’s health and wellbeing and need for healing, it’s cycles and shifting states of being in response to both psychological, emotional and environmental factors. A beautiful image here is of Mercury – the rulng planet of Virgo (as well as Gemini) – the element of mercury is an extrodinairily quick-responder to changes in environmental pressure and temperature, dramatically adapting its form in a high sensitivity to changes.
This is the sign of healers and craftspeople, those who are wise in folk medicine and natural remedies, who may draw on a breadth of healing wisdom in their work. Virgos tend to be sensitive listeners and witnesses to their bodies, and observant of others. This is the sign of support workers tending a breadth of practical and soulful needs; those understated beings quietly beavering away to make Life a little better or easier for others. Who may quietly worry that they aren’t doing enough.
